Windows 8.1 Upgrade in Surface Pro

After Microsoft’s announcement of Windows 8.1, I was waiting for upgrading my PCs to it. I upgraded my Desktop PC using the MSDN RTM builds on 19th September. My Desktop is an Active Directory Domain joined PC. On this, I installed the “MSDN” ISO build through the setup file. For reasons I couldn’t decipher, during setup I was presented only two options; one was to do a “fresh” OS install, two was to to “copy” all documents and files. I went with second option hoping my Win32 Programs, Windows8 Apps will be migrated smoothly. But I found Windows 8.1 was installed as a fresh OS and my documents just copied…

    Nokia Lumia 925

Early this year I switched from iPhone to Nokia Lumia 920 and every since I am loving Windows Phone experience. When I am travelling I carry as a second phone, so intermittently I use an iPhone or Android, but I find those uncomfortable. This speaks volumes of the clean and simple interface of Windows Phone. It is the iOS of 2013! So why did I upgrade from Lumia 920 now (and didn’t do even when I broke the glass few months back). My development team working on Windows Phone apps wanted Lumia 920 for dev/testing, which got me to part with it. When I shopped around for a new phone,…

    iOS7 Beta–Anxious moments, Fix

The readers of this blog know that I moved to Nokia Lumia 920 few months back from iPhone. Listening to this week announcement of iOS7 by Apple in their WWDC 2013 event, I got intrigued and wanted to try it out. Since I have an Apple Developer account, I could get access to the Developer Beta of iOS. That’s what I did after I dusted my iPhone4 from storage. Over the years as I started sporting grey hairs, I have learned that it is always a bad idea to upgrade to Beta (unsupported) software especially Operating Systems in your “Work” devices – whether it is your Desktop PC, Laptop or…

Fix the Internet Sharing in Nokia Lumia 920

Today I had a client meeting and I had to do some demos with my iPad3. I don’t have 3G in my iPad, I generally share the connection from my iPhone. Now with my shiny new Nokia Lumia 920 (Windows Phone 8 OS), I tried to do the same. I could set up everything  (enable Internet sharing on phone, connect to the WiFi hotspot from the iPad) easily but for some strange reason, I couldn’t connect from my iPad. Trying to connect from the iPad, even stopped the data connection in the phone. After returning to office, I tried to connect to the Phone shared WiFi Hotspot from my Laptop which…

    Nokia Lumia 920

I bought a Nokia Lumia 920 & using it as my mobile for last two weeks. Yes, you heard me right! I started using iPhone exactly 4 years back, first with iPhone3G and two years back iPhone4. Then I got myself deeper into Apple Ecosystem, moving all music/movies to iTunes, buying an iMac to manage/store it and then recently iPad3. So this month when I decided to change my aging iPhone4, the choices in front of me were just two. Go the least friction route to buy iPhone5 or go with Windows Phone. I don’t seem to like Android so that was a sure no-go for me, I have tried…

New UI of Twitter App on Windows Phone

Windows Phone does a nice job of integrating your social networks (LinkedIn, Twitter & Facebook) into People Hub and voiding the need for separate apps for most common tasks. But it’s nice to have the official apps for accessing the latest and proprietary features of each platform. As a recent convert to Windows Phone, I felt good that Twitter is investing and updating its app this week for the platform. I never had a complaint about the existing version of the Twitter App on Windows Phone, but the new version makes it consistent across mobile platforms. This makes my transition from iPhone to the Windows Phone version super smooth. I…

    iTunes Sync Error

For last few weeks I keep getting this error (shown below) whenever I am synching my iPad to iTunes library. I tried restarting iPad, synching few times – nothing helped. To understand more, I wanted to see more information on what’s causing this. But I couldn’t figure out where in iTunes (as the message asks you to) to look out for the actual error message. After some searching it turns out that you can see the details by clicking on a Triangle icon that appears next your iPad name before the Eject button in iTunes in your OS X. The icon goes away after some time, so you got to…

Windows Phone 8 supports Tamil Display

Though Microsoft through Windows 2000 was one of the earliest OS to support Indic Languages including Tamil, Windows Mobile and Windows Phone 7.x (both being based on Windows CE OS) never supported Complex Script rendering using Unicode. This meant I couldn’t  move to a Windows Phone from my iPhone if I wanted to still read my mother tongue (Tamil) – which I do. I got interested when Microsoft announced in June 2012 that they will move in the new version “Windows Phone 8” from Windows CE to the full Windows NT Kernel. This was a good sign that WindowsPhone will finally get Complex Script rendering support and the blog post…
