    Android Kunjappan Version 5.25 (2019)

Android Kunjappan Version 5.25 was an engaging film that you shouldn’t miss. It is about a Robot named “Android Kunjappan” that is tested to take care of an octogenarian Mr Bhaskara Poduval. Unlike what you will expect to see the Robot to be just a gimmick, here it was central to the screenplay and the team has produced a convincing visualization. Mr Bhaskaran played brilliantly by Suraj Venjaramoodu, is a conservative old man who has lived a simple life in a small town on his own terms. When his grown-up son, an engineer, Subrajmannyan (played by Soubin Shahir) takes up a job in a robot building Japanese company in Russia,…

    Virus (2019)

In the current scare with #COVID19, everyone should be watching this Malayalam film, Virus (2019), on how the state of Kerala handled the 2018 Nipah virus outbreak swiftly and effectively. The film directed by Aashiq Abu can be described as a documentary on the deadly episode. Under normal circumstances, I may not have liked this film as much as I did now, but I did and it eased my current anxiety a bit. It is available in Amazon Prime Video. It starts with a single case of a young male, dying under mysterious conditions, quickly snowballing into an outbreak with nurses and doctors getting affected first. The local officials are…

    Kumbalangi Nights (2019)

Kumbalangi Nights (2019) is an offbeat rom-com by director Madhu C. Narayanan, an unbelievable debut film for him. Even for a Malayalam cinema, the first-half goes extremely slow, expending a lot of time in setting the mood, but after that, the film shifts to a higher gear and was rewarding watch. It is about four (half) brothers who lead a slothful life, fighting with each other all the time, they are as far away from being a family. Living in a half-completed house on the sides of a mucky lake, they don’t even get up to do the work they know well-fishing. In this context, one of the brothers “Bobby”…

    Janamaithri (2019)

Out of a simple incident, Malayalam cinema is famous for making an enjoyable comedy, and they succeed where others fail by resisting the temptation to spice things up. Janamaithri (2019) is one such film with an unbelievably plain story. As part of a citizen reach out exercise, Kerala Police decides they will offer a cup of hot black tea (kaṭṭan cāya aka കട്ടൻ ചായ) to all vehicle drivers during the night on all highways. In one police district, a set of halfwit police compels a car driver to drink a cup, the hot tea works as a laxative and he wants to immediately excrete. A constable is assigned to find…

    Jacobinte Swargarajyam (2016)

Jacobinte Swargarajyam (2016) is a Malayalam film starring Nivin Pauly, that I thoroughly enjoyed watching. Based on a true story of his friend whose father lost his fortune in the financial crisis of 2008, Director Vineeth Sreenivasan has bet on a solid script and stayed away from any heroism, which in my view made the film standout. The entire film happens in Dubai, with its freshness for the audience here, adds to its appeal. Jacob Zachariah, a successful businessman in Dubai, is known for his honesty, generosity and confidence in all his dealings. Having climbed the business leader through hard work, he now lives a comfortable and happy life with his wife and 4…
