    Badhaai Do (2022)

In recent years, Bollywood has been making movies based on unconventional themes. Badhaai Ho (2018) made a comedy on the embarrassing idea of motherhood at fifty’s, then Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (2021) was bolder to feature a transwoman character as the heroine.  Now, Badhaai Do (2022) explores the difficulty of being homosexual in a conservative society like India. The film had its dull moments but can be absolved for its theme, hence it gets a Ripe in our mangoidiots scale. Available on Netflix. Shardul Thakur (played by Rajkummar Rao) is a police officer in Dehradun, who hides from everyone around him that he is gay. Suman Singh (played by Bhumi Pednekar)…

    Kadaisi Vivasayi (2022)

Kadaisi Vivasayi (2022), meaning the last farmer, will surely impact you. It follows a slice of the life of an octogenarian farmer who leads a simple yet fulfilled life. The current trend in Kollywood is to show how noble and difficult the plight of farmers is, so I was expecting an emotionally draining film here, but Kadaisi Vivasiyi was brisk and fun to watch. Known for realistic films like Kaaka Muttai (2015), director M Manikandan has made this one too with little cinematic cliches. Please don’t miss this film, it is available on Sony Liv and gets a Ripe rating from Mangoidiots. The film starts with the timeless devotional song…

    The Adam Project (2022)

There are different types of time travel movies – some are like the classic Back to the Future (1985) or the Primer (2004) that appear to be based on good science, some others are made just for fun like the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989) or the Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) and some are in between like The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009). The recent film on Netflix, The Adam Project (2022) wants to be all of the above, as a result, it was none of them and was forgettable. It gets my default rating of Raw, as it left me with no particular impression. A fighter pilot Adam…

    Sweet Magnolias (TV Series)

Maybe, it is the influence of Archie comics and Riverdale, but I am enthralled with stories that happen in small towns. I feel a sense of tranquillity to see a local community where everyone knows everyone else. Of course, any such territory is not far from having petty rivalry and anger among a few of its residents. This combination creates a fertile ground for telling engaging tales and Sweet Magnolias on Netflix is one such story. Sweet Magnolias, the TV series that has completed two seasons is a romantic drama that centres around three (almost) single women and their families & friends. The story happens in a fictional South Carolina…

    Etharkkum Thunindhavan (2022)

Etharkkum Thunindhavan (2022) is a run-of-the-mill movie that is acceptable just by not being bad like Suriya’s earlier films like Kaapaan (2019) or NGK (2019). The film gets a “Raw” in mangoidiots scale and I watched it in a theatre – the last movie I watched in a theatre was Asuraguru (2020) and that was exactly two years ago. Suriya comes as Kannapiran, son of Aadhirayar (Sathyaraj) and Kosalai (Saranya), and is an activist lawyer in a village called ThenNadu. Their sister village is VadaNadu.  Inba (played  by Vinay Rai) from VadaNadu is the son of a central minister, and runs an evil empire by recording naked videos of young…
