What We Did on Our Holiday (2014)

I didn’t expect to like this film, but I did! Let me explain, What We Did on Our Holiday (2014) is a British film, a clean comedy, about a dysfunctional family and three kids. The first hour of the film was dull & makes you question your choice – if you are able to plough through, you see the kids’ takeover and it becomes enjoyable. The film is available on Amazon Prime Video and manages a ‘Ripe’ rating because of the last half-an-hour. Please don’t look for much logic here, just go with the flow and you will like it too. Doug and Abi, a couple in London with three…

    The Courier (2020)

Spy movies need not be action thrillers like James Bond, in recent years there have been films that were inspired by true incidents and told subtly like  A Call to Spy (2019), which featured women protagonists during the Nazi occupation of France and Red Sparrow (2018) which had a female lead but from the other side of the iron curtain. The Courier (2020) follows this style and talks of a British salesman who played a key role in bringing vital documents from Moscow that prevented the Cuban missile crisis from going nuclear. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch (famous as Doctor Strange), The Courier (2020) was engaging and crisp. Available on Amazon Prime…

    Sundari (2021)

Sundari (2021) is a Telugu drama featuring Shamna Kasim aka Poorna and Arjun Ambati. It is available on Amazon Prime Video and gets a ‘Raw’ rating. The film follows the life of a young bride hailing from a village, married hurriedly to a software engineer in Hyderabad after the hero falls in love after the first sight of her. Transplanted to a new environment, with no support system or family to comfort her, she is faced with solving an impossible situation in her own way. The story is not a new one, we have seen variations of it in Indian cinema and World cinema, but Sundari handles it in a…

    Bell Bottom (2021)

Bell Bottom (2021) is about an Indian RAW agent and team rescuing a hijacked plane, starring Akshay Kumar and Vaani Kapoor. Though it was an action story with patriotic rhetoric, I liked the way it tries, not succeeding always, to stay far from superhero-like narratives. The film was fast-paced with little historic lessons and repetitive explanations. The screenplay had drawbacks, but it was entertaining and manages to get our ‘Ripe’ rating. It is available on Amazon Prime Video. It is 1984, and an Indian Airlines flight IC 691 gets hijacked and Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi, calls her core team (now known as the National Security Council) comprising of senior…

    Shershaah (2021)

Shershaah (2021) is about the Kargil war that happened in 1999, which was the last full-fledged conflict between India and Pakistan with high stakes for both sides. Instead of covering the entire war, the movie by Director Vishnuvardhan follows the journey of Captain Vikram Batra, a budding army officer from Himachal who was later awarded India’s highest military decoration of the Param Vir Chakra. The focus on one individual (Vikram) made the story relatable and enjoyable. The film is available on Amazon Prime Video and as I am feeling generous today gets a mangoidiots rating of ‘Ripe’. The first from his family to join the Indian Army, Vikram (Sidharth Malhotra)…
