Asuran (2019) is a familiar village caste conflict and revenge story, that dazzles you because of the exceptional acting by Dhanush and intense storytelling by Vetrimaaran. Dhanush has been ably supported by Manju Warrier. The second hero in the film was G.V.Prakash Kumar’s spirited background music, it has added a different dimension to every action sequence in the film. Actor Karuna’s son Ken Karunas comes as Dhanush’s second son and the boy shows a lot of promise. Caste and Feudalism are real and painful problems in Indian villages. I wish the Director had presented a ‘different’ perspective to this complex…

Had Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019) been released a few years it would’ve made major ripples everywhere. The Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi’s film has everything going for it – an emotionally charged independence story, dazzling star cast starting with the one-and-only Amitabh Bachchan, Nayanthara, Tamannaah, Vijay Sethupathi, Jagapathi Babu, Sudeep, Anushka Shetty and others – unfortunately it falls just a bit short of becoming Tollywood’s Veerapandiya Kattabomman due to a pastel screenplay. The film’s story is about Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy (Chiranjeevi) was one of the Polygars in Kurnool district, Rayalaseema Region of Andhra Pradesh in the 1840s. He rose up against…

Kaapaan (காப்பான்) was an action thriller with big dreams but little to show. Compared to the recent films of actor Suriya, this one by Director K V Anand feels better and that itself is a big stretch. The first half was quite engaging, with Suriya playing a government secret agent tasked with saving Prime Minister’s life in London and then in Kashmir – the locations and the camerawork were beautiful. We are impressed with the screen presence of Mohanlal who comes as India’s Prime Minister. Sadly, it is downhill after the interval – Arya being given little to do and hence he…

Sivappu Manjal Pachai (meaning Red, Orange & Green indicating Traffic Signals) is a film that will easily be forgotten. Actor Siddharth has delivered a wonderful performance, mature and composed, and it is unfortunate Director Sasi has wasted that in a film with a dreary second-half. The film starts well as a sentiment story of a girl and her younger brother, who grew up alone after losing their parents, reminding us of Meyaadha Maan (2017). Then the first-half transforms into a conflict between the two important males in the life of that lady (played by Lijomol Jose) – her lover (played by…

Saaho (2019) is a grand film, resembling a Hollywood production, even Mumbai city comes out as rich-looking as Dubai.  The efforts of the entire team, particularly around the action sequences and special effects are clearly visible, and for that, the film deserves a mention. Prabhas has done his role well. There are plenty of other actors, including Arun Vijay, Mandira Bedi and Murali Sharma, unfortunately, none leave a mark. The heroine Shraddha Kapoor just managing to dazzle the audience with her bright costumes. What starts as a master-conman vs police flick, quickly descends into a hotchpotch screenplay with too many…
