    Ippadikku Nandhini

“Ippadikku Nandhini” is the latest play by Shraddha. Story and Dialogue is by S.L.Naanu (Kathady Ramamurthy’s Drama Troup). After a tasty Masala Dosa and Curd Vada in the Woodlands Restaurant, I went inside to see the play in Narada Gana Sabha, Alwarpet. This family play is centered around a young couple Nandhini (played by Lavanya Venugopal) and Vignesh (played by Anand Ram). Due to biological problem with Nandhini, the couple couldn’t have a baby. After a bit of hesitation by either of them to share this news to the other, they decide to go for adoption. Hailing from an orphanage Nandhini finds the idea easy and quickly selects a young…

    Yavarkkum oru kaadhal

From today for next four days Shraddha, the Tamil theatre group are staging their new Tamil Play ”Yavarkkum oru kaadhal” (யாவர்க்குமாம் ஒரு காதல்) at Narada Gana Sabha Hall. The play’s cast include Kathadi Ramamurthy, Girish, Sichitra Ravi, Swaminathan & others. For previous plays I mostly get to watch on the last or last but one staging, surprisingly for this one I managed to watch it on the first day. The story is about how parents (Single Mother-Single Father) of a love couple fall in love themselves. The veteran actor Mr.Kathadi Ramamurthy has delivered a fine performance, considering his age he was the most energetic on stage. I liked the performance…

The play titled “Idiyudan Koodiya Anbhu Mazhai” is a romantic story, concept for which is by Iyakkunar sigaram Dr.K.Balachandar and dialogues by Mr.Vivek Rajagopal. The story is about struggles teenagers in modern India especially from upper middle class families. Both of them are parented by single parents (both of them suffer from loss of their mom) who each have their faults. The play’s strength was the simple…

    Vyugam–Tamil Play

I don’t miss a chance to see a Play by Shraddha Theatre People. This week they were performing their new play “Vyugam”, written by Kaushik and Directed by S.Anand Babu. The play has only about 5 characters and within them the story moves around the main 3 characters, but thanks to the suspense and the dialogues we are engaged. The stage is done entirely in Black “n” White hues & news read out in AIR (All In Radio) style, inspired by the nostalgic Oscar winning movies now. These amplify the mood of the plot, almost all the colours on stage are kept to Gray shades. Nice job. The story is…

    Asthiram

Today I went to “Asthiram” (அஸ்திரம்) a play by Shraddha Theatre People. It was acted by Kathadi Ramamurthy, Sundarrajan, Shivaji Chathurvedi & others. Directed by K.Vivek Shankar. I have been to few of the earlier plays by Shraddha and just like them this too was a fine work. The play was about a terrorist attempt to steal the formula of a secret deadly weapon being developed by an Indian Scientist. The story happens in a street on the town of Vaitheeswaran koil in Tamil Nadu. The street has typical households you will see in every village / town of Tamil Nadu, they are brought to life by a fine set…

    Vidhuran

After Vadavooran, this is the next stage play under the Shraddha umbrella and I went for it with my wife and son today. Vidhuran is performed in a mime (No dialogs except for a brief introduction) format which is new to Chennai. To tell Mahabharat in this format is a bold step by MacTrics, a Mime and Body Theatre Group formed in 2009. Their facebook page introduces the play as “Inspired from the Vidura of Mahabharata, Vidhuran is an amalgamation of three performing arts – Theatre, Dance, and Mime combined to tell a single story. With an enthralling Monologue at its narrative core, snippets of scintillating Mime presentations and stylized,…

    Vadavooran

Last year I had been to “Madras to Chennai” a fine play by Shraddha group. Impressed by the show I became an annual paid member. This new year 2012, there first production is a historical play – Vadavooran (வாதவூரன்). It is about Manickavachagar (மாணிக்கவாசகர்) who gave the great Tamil work Thiruvasagam (திருவாசகம்). The play starts from the point where Vadavooran who was the Chief Minister to Pandya King, sets out to buy fine Roman horses for the king. On the way while at the depleted temple at Tiruperunturai Avudiyar Koil, he realizes the Supreme Being (Lord Siva) and instantly decides to renovate and rebuild the temple. The king imprisons Vadavooran…
