    Mandibules (2020)

Mandibules (2020) is a French comedy about two petty thieves finding a giant fly and trying to train it for their personal gain. Reading the description, I had expectations for the film but it turned out to be routine. The film exhibited as part of the French film festival by ICAF gets my Raw rating. When driving a stolen car to collect a parcel, Jean-Gab finds a giant fly in the trunk. His friend Manu, gives an idea of training the fly and using that to earn money. The two go in search of a place to house the fly and do the training. Initially, they use a mobile home…

    Etharkkum Thunindhavan (2022)

Etharkkum Thunindhavan (2022) is a run-of-the-mill movie that is acceptable just by not being bad like Suriya’s earlier films like Kaapaan (2019) or NGK (2019). The film gets a “Raw” in mangoidiots scale and I watched it in a theatre – the last movie I watched in a theatre was Asuraguru (2020) and that was exactly two years ago. Suriya comes as Kannapiran, son of Aadhirayar (Sathyaraj) and Kosalai (Saranya), and is an activist lawyer in a village called ThenNadu. Their sister village is VadaNadu.  Inba (played  by Vinay Rai) from VadaNadu is the son of a central minister, and runs an evil empire by recording naked videos of young…

    The King’s Man (2021)

The King’s Man (2021) is the third instalment of the fictitious British spy organization and is the prequel to Kingsman (2014) and Kingsman 2 (2017). The story happens around World War I, and the events that led to the formation of the secret organization that saves the world. Unlike the first movie, this one was routine and lacked any of the humour that made it popular. The film gets my Raw rating. Ralph Fiennes comes as Duke of Oxford and the founder of King’s Man, he has done his role well. As Polly Watkins, the maid to Duke of Oxford and a trained fighter, Gemma Arterton has given a memorable…

    Enemy (2021)

For a movie about the onscreen clash of two popular Kollywood heroes Vishal and Arya, Enemy (2021) was unremarkable. It starts with two young boys, neighbours, going to the same school and playing together but grow up to be diagonally opposite personalities in life. Available on Sony Liv, it gets a Raw. Chozhan (played by Vishal), is a smart and talented young man, son of a single father who runs a grocery store in Little India in Singapore. While his loving father, a stereotypical character played by Thambi Ramaiah, wants Chozhan to lead a normal life, Chozhan takes up causes of common good for the community and fights for it…

    Encanto (2021)

Encanto (2021) is a charming, heartwarming animated film that is a fantasy comedy. Three generations of the Madrigal family live in a magical house named “Casita”. Each of the family members, except the lovely Mirabel, have been gifted with special powers which they use for the welfare of their small community protected by mountains. The film available on Disney+ Hotstar is not to be missed and get a Ripe. In recent years, the quality of the animations are improving by leaps and bounds. In this, a few characters like the superhuman sister of Mirabel, Luisa Madrigal, appear cartoonish. But others like Mirabel with her big brown eyes, large round spectacles…
