    Appathava Aattaya Pottutanga (2021)

Appathava Aattaya Pottutanga (அப்பத்தாவ ஆட்டய போட்டுடாங்க) is a comedy with a difference. An elderly mother Meenakshi unloved by her son and admitted to an old-age home falls in love with another resident, an elderly gentleman Ramasamy – the couple elopes and seeks the help of their friends (octogenarians) to get married. With this one-line story, Director N. Stephen Rangaraj has given an engaging film thanks to a humorous screenplay. Veterans Kathadi Ramamurthy, Delhi Ganesh & Shanmugasundaram delight us with their expert performances. The film is available on Sony Liv, and scores a ‘Ripe’ for its novelty and an apt runtime. Chandrahasan has played the role of Ramasamy well. I liked…

    Mathil (2021)

Owning a house has been a central theme in Tamil artworks for a long time. Writer Mr Devan had immortalised the practical difficulties of constructing your own house in his classic “Rajathin Manoratham” and Director Balu Mahendra and Archana had brought to life the middle-class working woman who struggles to get a house built. We can see Mathil (2021) be a continuation to these and a tribute to similar works. Mathil (2021) is a Tamil film available on Zee5 starring director K S Ravikumar. It highlights the issues faced by the common man in the hands of politicians and people in power. In this case, the problem starts when a…

    Putham Pudhu Kaalai (2020)

Putham Pudhu Kaalai (புத்தம் புது காலை) is an anthology of five short-film made by renowned Tamil directors, all revolving around the pandemic lockdown situation. While all the stories were good, the first two were brilliant and a must-watch. Its streaming on Amazon Prime Video. All of them had limited casting in each story which makes us connect to the characters very well. The houses featured in the first four stories were beautiful, literally I got transported to each one of them, such was the cinematography. The first one “Ilamai Idho Idho” directed by Sudha Kongara is about an elderly love like in Pa Paandi (2017). Here it is Jayaram and…

    Thuppariyum Sambu

Shraddha theatre group stages for last two days a play by writer Devan (தேவன்), who is regarded as Tamil Nadu’s P.G.Wodehouse. The Tamil play is based on Devan’s  famous novel titled Thuppariyum Sambu (துப்பறியும் சாம்பு), it’s a humorous take on a simpleton detective whose unfailing luck solves all the cases and brings him untold riches. The book was my son’s favourite as bedtime story when he was growing up. I watched the play today, it was Directed and starred by veteran Tamil Play artist Kathadi Ramamurthy (காத்தாடி ராமமூர்த்தி). Just seeing him as Sambu with his longgg nose on screen was enough to get the audience laughing. The book had many dozen exploits of Sambu, which had to…

    Yavarkkum oru kaadhal

From today for next four days Shraddha, the Tamil theatre group are staging their new Tamil Play ”Yavarkkum oru kaadhal” (யாவர்க்குமாம் ஒரு காதல்) at Narada Gana Sabha Hall. The play’s cast include Kathadi Ramamurthy, Girish, Sichitra Ravi, Swaminathan & others. For previous plays I mostly get to watch on the last or last but one staging, surprisingly for this one I managed to watch it on the first day. The story is about how parents (Single Mother-Single Father) of a love couple fall in love themselves. The veteran actor Mr.Kathadi Ramamurthy has delivered a fine performance, considering his age he was the most energetic on stage. I liked the performance…
