Beware of Indian Income Tax Spoof emails

In the past I have seen many bogus emails claiming to be from US Income Tax (IRS) Department, most of those emails are poorly crafted and are immediate give-away for trained IT eyes like mine. These SPAM emails are sent by modern day crooks through Zombies to fish (phishing) your personal information like credit card or bank account passwords. Today I got an email claiming to be from Indian Income Tax department it looked so genuine at first site but for two sure easy give-aways. See the original email I got below.

Two items in the above email raised my suspicion are:

1.Income Tax Department when they are able to send a personalized email with exact amount of Refund (Rs.36,120.25) surely knows my name or my PAN Number (Unique number for every Tax Payer), but this email says Valued TaxPayer. Indian IT Department normally address the tax payer as “Assesse”.

2. Moving my mouse over the link (not clicking on it) titled “To Submit a request click here”  shows a web address which is different from incometaxindia.gov.in or *.gov.in. See the screenshot below. Copying the base web address alone from what was shown and visiting the site (please don’t try this at home) takes me an Arabic Website which does looks genuine but seems to have been compromised (hacked into) and infected with malicious code that if visited can come down and infect your computer as well.

So this is certainly a fraud email and please delete it immediately without opening it. If you opened it and not clicked on the link nothing much may have happened. Run a scan of your machine and relax. If you are curious on what the page would have done here is a screenshot (please don’t try this at home, I have taken this from a safe Virtual PC that I have destroyed immediately after the screenshot), it redirects to another website which shows a cloned webpage of IT Department then sends you to your Bank’s website for online transfer. If you come this far and typed in your password, your money is gone. You may want to complain immediately to your banker and to nearest Police station or Cybercrime branch – but there is very little of chance of your money coming back, as all these crimes are done across international borders.

The sender (spammer) of this email has done some things correct like the design of the email, sourcing the image (LOGO Image file of IT Department ) from IT Department’s official website itself.

There are of course more technical ways to identify the sender (and hence the authenticity) of an email through SMTP MailServer headers and so on, you can use a simple Bing! search to learn more.

The Social Networking movie

This is one movie that anyone using FaceBook or any other social sites should certainly not miss out. It shows how a great idea coupled with a fine execution results in a runaway success, along the way you are sure to earn enemies. I have been waiting for the release of this movie “The Social Networking”. It is good to have the movie released in India after its US release last month. Having decided suddenly we couldn’t get tickets in INOX or Satyam, so we went for this movie with our friends at Mayajaal. The movie showed in the new Screen 12 at Mayajaal which has a bigger screen than their other screens. I was not sure whether my wife will like the movie if it becomes documentary like or too technical, but the movie was enjoyed by all of us.

The movie is about the founding years of FaceBook.com. What makes the movie interesting is the way the story is told. Instead of telling the sequence of events, the Director throughout the film shows Mark Zuckerberg testifying in depositions in two lawsuits: one filed by the Winklevoss twins (his seniors in Harvard who claimed to have come with the idea first), and the other filed by Eduardo (his friend at Harvard and co-founder). This technique of showing the present-day lawsuit and flash-back scenes make the movie fast-paced and captivating.  All the actors in the film have done a great job in portraying the living characters they have taken, especially Jesse Eisenberg who portrays Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew Garfield who plays Eduardo Saverin and Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker (Founder of Napster) have done a superb job.

After seeing the movie I was reminded of the book I read last year (Once You’re Lucky, Twice You’re Good). Immediately I went back to my library and read again the chapter on FaceBook – I was able to enjoy it now more than the first time.

Social – Best Habits to follow and Pitfalls to avoid

About two weeks back, I got an email through my blog from Mrs.GeethaLakshmi, CEO of ABAttorneys, Dubai. Then after few phone calls of mutual pleasantries and introductions, Mrs.Geetha came to my office early this week and invited me to do a talk. The talk was to be at the launch event of their Legal Compliance & IT Security Audit product in India.

I gave the talk yesterday  at the event in Chancery Hotel, Bangalore on ‘Social – Best Habits to follow and Pitfalls to avoid’. Since it was a product launch event with mixed audience, from various industries and family members I decided to choose a topic that is not technical – it has to appeal to a wide range of people and be interesting and relevant to them as well. I guess I did deliver what I intended to.

The team from ABAttorneys were awesome in their hospitality and arrangements. Thank you all and thank you Mrs.Geetha for inviting me to do the talk.
