Nowadays it’s become a trend to have minimal ports in the ultra-books or the hybrids like Surface Pro. The new Apple Macbook takes it to the extreme with having a single USB-C port. You are kidding yourself if you think that the weight of your carry on will reduce by not having many ports. In reality you end up carrying half a dozen adapters, adding up to the weight and causing chaos while usage. In my view a work ultra-book should have few USB ports, a HDMI port at the minimum and optionally a physical Ethernet port. There are few occasions including while adding your machine to Windows Active Directory domain that requires an Ethernet port and physical cables give you faster connectivity with minimal interference compared with WiFi especially when you are working from your regular desk at home or office.

In the past I have written about buying a USB to LAN Adapter here for using with my Surface Pro. Though the device worked well, I was connecting it through an USB hub so that I can plugin a Thumb-drive to the single USB port that’s in Surface Pro. This meant I had to now carry two adapters. That’s when I found this device USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (Convertor) with 3 PORT USB 3.0 HUB sold by CNCT in Amazon India for Rs.1699. I purchased the device which plugs into a single USB port in your PC and provides 3 USB ports and an Ethernet Port for use.

Windows 10 automatically installed the required drivers and both the USB Hub & Ethernet port (ASIX AX88179 USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter) started working immediately. It feels a bit bulky though with dimensions of 11 Cms (Height) x 3 Cms (Width) x 2 Cms (Depth).
