Every year eWIT (Empowering Women in IT), a voluntary women’s forum that encourages interchange of ideas and role of Women in the IT industry in the country. Surprising to me, they invited me to be one of the panelists for Technology track in their annual Excellence Award competition. The Awards are for women professionals in the IT/ITES industry designed to provide an opportunity to showcase their talent and expertise in their respective areas.

This year awards had three categories, Technology, Quality & Human Resources.  The topic for Technology was “Managing data with emerging technologies“. The  objective set out, was to examine how the emerging data management technologies integrates several data management infrastructure and capabilities required to implement Big Data ecosystem. In the panel, I was joined by Jayashree Sridharan (Associate Vice President, Cognizant) and Raju Subramanian (CTO, Sciplogix).

We had five papers shortlisted for the oral presentation today, out of which we had a tough job of selecting the winner and runner-up. The awards are expected to be handed over in eWIT annual event soon. My wishes to all the five participants and congratulations to the winners.

Big Data is a vast subject where it’s unlikely any individual would have worked alone or done any path breaking work. The idea of the competition was not to be looking for an Unicorn but to be a catalyst in encouraging outside comfort zone thinking for Women in IT who mostly will be working in IT Services firms where innovation is not common. It takes effort and dedication for the participants to prepare and submit their entries. What we looked for in selecting the winners were their presentation & communication skills, technical clarity and examples of any specific business case they are proposing for Big Data Technologies.
