I have been using XBOX 360 as a Media Centre for allowing my son to see his cartoons & for me to access my music & movie collections from my PC into my living room. For my Dad it was an overkill, so I wanted something simpler that also allowed some basic web browsing apart from allowing access to the videos I have in my PC.
After seeing the launch video of Google TV, I got excited and purchased it online from Amazon. for $299 Got it shipped to one of my friends in USA who was coming to India, I got the device two weeks back and had it configured recently. My quick take below after using Logitech Revue for few days:
Pro: 1) Logitech has bundled their Media Player App that allows accessing any UPnP libraries in the house including Windows 7 or Zune media sharing. The app is in beta and doesn’t seem to play all of popular video formats
2) The device is compact, silent and has in-built power-pack, no separate power bricks. It has USB ports for connecting memory sticks to play video/audio/pictures from it
3) There is a cool iPhone App for Logitech Revue that can be used as a remote anywhere in the house (local WI-FI region)
4) The keyboard is light and keys are quite big, trackpad is responsive
5) Browsing is at decent speed – no significant lack that you can notice on simple tasks
Con: 1) Logitech Revue came with a big keyboard which is good for email and password typing, but inconvenient for most about everything – especially for plain content browsing
2) The Trackpad/mouse pointer and arrow keys/enter combination behave independently and takes quite a while to get used to. The trackpad is in the right-top corner, mouse click button is on left-top corner
3) There is very little integration between the various Google services. For example there is no native App (which I suppose was easy to do with Android) for YouTube or Picasa – two of the most compelling apps in my opinion for Google TV. They simply load up in Google Chrome browser and you need to type your Google username / password in them – doesn’t take it from the system-wide configuration you have done
4) There is Input options for a DVR and Setup-top box (Cable), but no input source for a plain DVD Player. The DVR can’t be used for this as Google TV insists on recognizing and able to control the DVR. It even insists on me typing my LCD TV (Samsung) Model number before it allowed me to do anything
5) So far, I am not able to find Android Store to get new apps; may be I am missing something.
In short the whole product is clearly a v1.0. In my opinion Google needs to improve the software dramatically in next upgrade, otherwise it is doomed to die even faster than Google Wave. My recommendation will be to wait for next version before you decide to buy this.
Travel is when I get to watch more movies. Last week I was on a business trip to Singapore. Got to watch Badmaash Company in the onward journey in Air India, 3 Idiots on the return and Race to Witch Mountain in Star Movies in the Hotel Room.
Badmaash Company: Badmaash Company is a Hindi film starring Shahid Kapoor & Anushka Sharma. The movie was about 4 friends making it big time by exploiting the holes in the tax & banking system and by outsmarting businesses. Second half of the movie happens in USA and the screen-play is kept quite interesting throughout. The plots employed to win are pretty naive to pull off in real-life. Anushka comes out beautiful throughout the movie and most of the costumes by all the characters were looking good. Overall, usual Bollywood Masala but worth watching – nice entertainment.
3 Idiots: A box office hit Hindi comedy film directed by Munnabhaifame Rajkumar Hirani, staring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan & Kareena Kapoor. I have been wanting to see this movie as it was adapted from the novel Five Point Someoneby Chetan Bhagat, which I had read few years back and enjoyed thoroughly. Obviously the movie is not exact rendering of the novel, but has been adapted for Aamir Khan and added Bollywood touches – I felt the changes are necessary and done nicely to keep the movie more entertaining. Kareen Kapoor is appearing much older for the role, while Aamir Khan amasses viewers by his young college student look. The subtitles I watched in Air India console were quite nice too. Overall, a definite watch Hindi movie.
Race to Witch Mountain: A typical Hollywood Aliens visiting Earth story with US government officials conspiring to keep the truth away from public. A Las Vegas Taxi driver in his cab saves the two alien kids from US defence forces and from Alien military forces – you can’t get any bigger than this for absolute entertainment . The two kids have done their characters quite nicely. For me the movie was better than watching Nth time BBC & CNN in my Hotel Room!
The last few days were quite eventful for me. As one of the Charter Member of TiEChennai I volunteered to help Raghu Rajagopal who was heading the team for the software (content) for TiECon Chennai 2010. TiE is a Silicon Valley USA based Entrepreneurship fostering association boosting over 11,000 members in 13 Countries and Chennai’s chapter is one of its vibrant. I took on the task of helping to identify and co-ordinate for the Tamil panel, which was a first in TiECon Chennai. It was a panel that show-cased success stories straight from the gut of those fearless entrepreneurs from the state. The journeys covered were path-breaking, across industries, started from scratch but today enveloping across the nation. The panel was moderated by none other than Chennai’s own illustrious star Mr.Y.Gee.Mahendra (YGM).

Ajit Balakrishnan, Founder Chairman of Rediff says that for broadband in India to reach 100-200Million penetration it should be offered at Rs.200 per month, that is the sweet spot. He adds that original content’s time has come – AOL,Yahoo! is getting their hands on it now, it is going to be big, but no one knows how big. Ajit says in a mature market like Japan Mobile Web browsing is multitude times more than Desktop, future is for Non-PC devices. I couldn’t agree with him more on all the points.
I love my iPhone and the ease with which it syncs music, videos, Podcasts & Contacts/Mails/Tasks (from Exchange Server through Microsoft ActiveSync). The only pain has been iTunes software which is cumbersome especially since I use it in Windows. Getting photos organized in iTunes is the most limited. In Windows I can only sync one folder (why on earth I can’t select multiple folders?) or use Adobe PhotoShop Elements.
I tried a Quick ‘n’ Dirty method to circumvent this, by using a less known capability in Windows (and in UNIX flavours) called Symbolic Links (Hard Links) which makes a folder along with its contents appear in multiple places. This is something like Shortcuts on steroids. You can create these Symbolic Links only from Command Line and there is no option for it from Windows Explorer, as it can lead to unintended behaviour for average users – I learned it the hard way later. I used this free program called “SymLinker” to create the Symbolic Links. The idea was to create one folder called say “iPhone Albums” under Pictures folder in Windows 7, map it in iTunes (Device->Photos tab) as the folder to sync photos from. Then create symbolic links for each of the many folders where you have the photos you want to be synced.
I mapped about 6 to 7 folders that had hundreds of photos each, everything worked just fine and I got all the albums synced fine. The next day (after I rebooted my machine), I couldn’t get iTunes to launch at all. I tried install/uninstall, deleting and recreating my Windows user profile and so on. Finally I had to restore from my Windows Backup *System Restore* to an earlier day and get iTunes working again. I am not sure whether the problem in iTunes was caused by using Symbolic links, but I guess it is safer not to try it. Having burned my fingers, I have bought Adobe PhotoShop Elements 9.0 for my desktop PC where I have all my photos – I will post that experience in a later post.

என்னைப் பொருத்தவரை இந்த நாவலின் சிறப்பே அதன் ஆழமான கதாப்பாத்திரங்களும், தெளிவான காட்சிகளும் தான், அதனால் ஒரு வரிக்கூட விடாமல் படிக்க வேண்டி இருந்தது. சில பக்கங்களை நான் இரண்டு/மூன்று முறைக்கூடப் படித்தேன், அப்படி படித்து உள்வாங்கிக் கொள்ளவில்லை என்றால் நாம் எதையோ விட்டுவிடுவதுப் போல் தோன்றுகிறது. ஆசிரியர் நிஜமாகவே எல்லா இடத்திலும் இருந்துக் கேட்டு எழுதியதுப் போல உள்ளது வசனங்கள் – அது பிரமாணர்களின் தமிழ் ஆகட்டும், மலையாளம் ஆகட்டும், முன்னோர்கள் சொல்லும் சமஸ்கிரத பாடல்கள் ஆகட்டும், கப்பலில் வரும் அமொரிக்கர் பேசும் ஆங்கிலமாகட்டும், கிறிஸ்தியானிகள் பேச்சாகட்டும் ஒருவரால் எப்படி இவ்வளவு நடைகளைச் சுலபமாக எழுதமுடிகிறது?.
470 பக்கங்கள் கொண்ட ஒரு நாவலைப் படிக்க பிடிக்கும் என்றால் படிக்க வேண்டிய புத்தகம். தமிழில் இது ஒரு நல்ல முயற்சி. பாராட்டுக்கள்.
After the movie today, our friends took us to a restaurant near-by in East Coast Road by name “Kipling’s cafe”. When driving from city to Pondy, you need to take left into a small lane (L.Jey Avenue, Akkarai) opposite to Go-Carte sign post, which comes few yards away from Malgudi restaurant on the right-hand side. Near ECR-OMR link road junction, Injambakkam.
The restaurant serves delicious Italian, Chinese, Continental and Thai cuisines. Pasta and Pizza are supposed to be their speciality. On my friend’s recommendation, we had Bread with Baba Ganouj, Bruschetta, Thin-Crust Pizza, Thai Noodles. The food tasted lovely. The restaurant has a very nice ambience, earthy interiors and beautiful landscape. The food can be pricey, the service was average, so be prepared. I will certainly recommend the place for a good outing and great food.
This is one movie that anyone using FaceBook or any other social sites should certainly not miss out. It shows how a great idea coupled with a fine execution results in a runaway success, along the way you are sure to earn enemies. I have been waiting for the release of this movie “The Social Networking”. It is good to have the movie released in India after its US release last month. Having decided suddenly we couldn’t get tickets in INOX or Satyam, so we went for this movie with our friends at Mayajaal. The movie showed in the new Screen 12 at Mayajaal which has a bigger screen than their other screens. I was not sure whether my wife will like the movie if it becomes documentary like or too technical, but the movie was enjoyed by all of us.
The movie is about the founding years of FaceBook.com. What makes the movie interesting is the way the story is told. Instead of telling the sequence of events, the Director throughout the film shows Mark Zuckerberg testifying in depositions in two lawsuits: one filed by the Winklevoss twins (his seniors in Harvard who claimed to have come with the idea first), and the other filed by Eduardo (his friend at Harvard and co-founder). This technique of showing the present-day lawsuit and flash-back scenes make the movie fast-paced and captivating. All the actors in the film have done a great job in portraying the living characters they have taken, especially Jesse Eisenberg who portrays Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew Garfield who plays Eduardo Saverin and Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker (Founder of Napster) have done a superb job.
After seeing the movie I was reminded of the book I read last year (Once You’re Lucky, Twice You’re Good). Immediately I went back to my library and read again the chapter on FaceBook – I was able to enjoy it now more than the first time.

கணினி உலகிலும் இன்று சீனா தான் “சூப்பர்”!
சூப்பர் ஸ்டார் என்றால் நமக்கெல்லாம் தெரியும், அது என்னது சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர்? எந்திரன் படத்தில் ‘சிட்டி’ ரோபோ அதன் பல அடிமை ரோபோக்களை எல்லாம் ஒருங்கிணைத்து கட்டுப்படுத்த அதற்குத் தேவையாகயிருந்த கணினியைப் போல பல ஆயிரம் மடங்கு கணிக்கும் திறன் கொண்டது தான் “சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர்”. இது நம் மடிகணினியைப் போன்று சிறியது அல்ல, மிகப் பெரியது, குளிர்படுத்தப்பட்ட பல ஆயிரம் சதுர அடி இடத்தில் பல நூறு நபர்கள் இயக்கும் ஒன்று. பொதுவாக மிகக்கடினமான அறிவியல், வானவியல், அணுவியல் ஆராய்ச்சிகளுக்கு ஒரு நொடியில் பல கோடான கோடி கணக்குகளுக்கு விடையறியும் திறன் வேண்டும், இதை செய்வது தான் ஒரு சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர்.
சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர்களை நம் தெருக்கோடியில் இருக்கும் மின்-சாதன கடையில் போய், கடன் அட்டையைக் காட்டியெல்லாம் சுலபமாக வாங்க முடியாது. அதைப் பெறப் பல ஆயிரம் பொறியியல் வல்லுநர்கள், பல ஆண்டுகள் கடினமாக உழைத்து தயாரிக்க வேண்டும். அதற்கு சில ஆயிரம் கோடி ரூபாய் முதலீடு வேண்டும். சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர் என்கிற வார்த்தையை முதன் முதலாகப் பயன்படுத்தியது எப்போது தெரியுமா? ஒரு நிமிடம் கண்களைத் துடைத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள் – 1929ஆம் ஆண்டு நியு-யார்க்-வேல்டு என்கிறப் பத்திரிகையில் தான்.
சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர் என்பது ஒரு நாட்டின் விஞ்ஞானப் பெருமையைப் பறைசாட்டுவது மட்டும் அல்ல, அது நாட்டின் நலன் மற்றும் பாதுகாப்பு சம்பந்தப்பட்டதும்கூட தான். நாம் மேலே கூறிய பயன்கள் போக சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர் இன்று பூமியிலுருக்கும் எண்ணெய் வளங்களைக் கணக்கிட்டு கண்டறியவும் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. அணு ஆராய்ச்சி என்பது போக்ரானில் நாம் வெடிக்கவைத்து பரிசோதித்தது போல செய்வது மட்டும் அல்ல, தற்போது அது போன்ற ஆராய்ச்சிகளுக்கு பெரிதும் தேவையானது சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர். பங்குச் சந்தையிலும், பன்னாட்டு நிறுவனங்களாலும் கூட பயன்படுத்தபடுகிறது சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர், அதற்கு உதாரணம் சொல்கிறது நியு-யார்க்-டைம்ஸ் நாளிதழ் – நமக்கு மிகவும் தெரிந்த ”விக்ஸ்”ஸை தயாரிக்கும் பி-அண்டு-ஜி நிறுவனம் தனது “பிருங்கள்” என்கிற உருளைக்கிழங்கு வருவல் உடையாமல் டப்பாவில் அடைக்கப்படுகிறதா என்பதைப் பார்க்க ஒரு சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டரைத் தான் பயன்படுத்துகிறார்கள் என்று.
எதற்கு இதை எல்லாம் இப்போது பார்க்கிறோம் என்று யோசிக்கிறீர்களா? ஆரம்ப காலம் முதலே சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர் உலகில் கோளோச்சி இருந்த ஆமெரிக்காவைப் போன மாதம் பின்னுக்குத் தள்ளி முதல் இடத்தை சீனா பிடித்திருப்பதனால் தான். அக்டோபர் கடைசி வாரத்தில் சீனாவின் பாதுகாப்புத் துறையின் கீழியிருக்கும் தேசிய சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர் கூடம் என்கிற அமைப்பு “தியந்-ஹி1ஏ” என்கிற சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டரைப் பற்றி தனது வெளியிட்டை அறிவித்தது. இது தான் உலகத்தில் இப்போது இருக்கும் சில நூறு சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர்களிலேயே வேகமானது, இதன் எடை மட்டுமே 155டன். நூற்றுமுப்பதிற்கும் மேற்பட்ட காபினெட்களினுள் (ஒவ்வொன்றும் நம்மூர் காத்ரேஜ் பீரோ போல இருக்கும்) அடைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதற்கு முன் இந்த இடத்திலிருந்த அமெரிக்கவின் டென்னஸ்ஸீயில் இருந்ததைவிட இது ஒன்றரை-மடங்கு அதிக திறன் கொண்டது. “தியந்-ஹி1ஏ” என்றால் பால்-வெளி அல்லது வானத்திலிருக்கும் ஆறு என்று பொருளாம்.
ஏதோ இந்த சாதனையை அதிர்ஷடவமாக தான் சீனா செய்துவிட்டது என்றோ இதில் எந்த அளவு உண்மை இருக்குமோ என்றெல்லாம் எண்ண வேண்டாம். அமெரிக்காவின் “தி-வீக்” என்கிற முக்கிய பத்திரிகையே இது ஒரு முறை செய்யப்பட்ட சாதனை அல்ல, இது சீனாவின் பல ஆண்டுக்களுக்கான தொலைநோக்கு திட்டத்தின் முதல் வெற்றி என்கிறது. இதற்கு முன் முதல் இடத்தில் டென்னஸ்ஸீ சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டரை இயக்கும் ஒரு விஞ்ஞானியான திரு.ஜாக்-டொங்குரா என்பவர் சொல்லியுள்ளார்’அமெரிக்கா விழித்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டிய தருணம்இது’ என்று.
கணினி உலகம் இப்போது ஒரு கணினியின் திறன், அதன் தனியான பயன்பாடு என்கிற மாதிரியில் இருந்து பல ஆயிரம் கணினிகளின் கூட்டுத்திறன் என்கிற முறைக்கு சென்று கொண்டு இருக்கிறது. இந்த அடிப்படையில் கூட சீனாவின் இந்த சாதனை முக்கியமானது, ஏன் என்றால் இந்த “தியந்-ஹி1ஏ” சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர்க் கூட பல ஆயிரம் (எண்ணிக்கையில் 2100) பிராசசர்களை (சில்லு செயலகம்) ஒன்றிணைத்து செயலப்பட வைக்கப்பட்டது தான். தனிப்பட்ட இந்த பிராசசர்கள் அமெரிக்காவில் கண்டுப்பிடிக்கப்பட்டது என்றாலும் ஒருங்கிணைப்பைச் செய்வது சீனர்கள் தாமாகவே தயாரித்த “ஆர்ச்” என்கிற ஒருங்கிணைப்பு தொழில்நுட்பம் தான்.
கணினி துறையில் எல்லாவற்றையும் போல எது சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர் என்பதும் மாறிக் கொண்டே இருக்கும். முதல் இடம் சில மாதங்களிலேயே முந்தப்படும். 1990-களில் வேகமான சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர் எது என்கிற பட்டியலில் அமெரிக்காவைப் பின்னுக்கு தள்ளிய ஜப்பானிடம் இருந்து 2004-ஆம் ஆண்டு அந்த இடத்தை அமெரிக்கா திரும்பப் பெற்றது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. மேலுமோர் ஒரு உதாரணம், 1997-ல் செஸ் உலக சாம்பியன் காரி-காஸ்பராவ்வை வென்ற ஐ-பி-எம் நிறுவனத்தின் “டீப்-புளூ” என்கிற சிறப்பு சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டரைவிட இன்று அலுவலகத்தில் இருக்கும் உங்கள் மேஜை-கணினியின் திறன் ஐந்திலிருந்து பத்து மடங்காவது அதிகம் என்றால் பார்த்துக் கொள்ளுங்களேன்.
சூன் 2010 வரையிலானக் கணக்கெடுப்பின்படி இந்தியாவில் பதினேழு சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர்கள் இருக்கிறது. சென்னையிலும், பூனேவிலும் தான் அதிகமானதாக ஒவ்வொரு நகரத்திலும் நான்கு உள்ளது. உலக நூறு சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர்கள் பட்டியலில் 33-ஆவது இடத்தில் தான் இந்தியாவின் டாடா சன்ஸ் “சி.ஆர்.எல்” என்கிற ஆராய்ச்சிக்கூடத்தில் இருக்கும் சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர் இருக்கிறது. இந்தியாவில் இருக்கும் பதினேழு சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர்களின் கூட்டு திறனைப் போல எட்டு மடங்கு அதிக திறன் கொண்டது சீனாவின் “தியந்-ஹி1ஏ” என்கிற அந்த ஒரே ஒரு சூப்பர்-கம்ப்யூட்டர் என்றால் நாம் செல்லவேண்டிய தூரம் எவ்வளவு என்று எளிதாகப் புரிந்து கொள்ளலாம். தற்போது இந்த சாதனை செய்துள்ள சீனா கடந்த 2003-ஆல் உலகப் பட்டியலில் ஐம்பொத்தொன்றாம் இடத்தில் தான் இருந்தது என்று நாம் நினைவில் கொள்ளவேண்டும்.
நண்பர் ஒருவரோடு இன்று எழுதாளர் திரு.சா.கந்தசாமி அவர்களைச் சந்தித்துவிட்டு அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம் சென்றேன். திறந்து இரண்டு மாதங்களே ஆன இந்த நூலகம் தமிழகத்தின்/இந்தியாவின் பெருமை என்றே தோன்றுகிறது. முழுவதும் குளிர்சாதன வசதி, வாகனங்களை நிறுத்த நிறைய இடம், பல நூறு மக்கள் அமர்ந்து படிக்க பல மேஜைகள்/நாற்காலிகள், சுறுச்சுறுப்பான தனியார் காவலர்கள், நட்பான தேர்ந்த பணியாளர்கள், அழகான/அமைதியான குழந்தைகள் பகுதி என சொல்லிக் கொண்டே போகலாம். முக்கியமாக ஒவ்வொரு தளத்திலும் திறந்திருக்கும் தண்ணீர் வருகின்ற சுத்தமான உயர்தர கழிப்புறைகள். இன்னொரு சிறப்பு அம்சம் உங்கள் சொந்தப் புத்தகங்களைலும் இங்கே எடுத்துச் சென்று அமைதியான சுழலில் படிக்கலாம்.
என் கவலை எல்லாம், இந்த நூலகத்தை இப்படியே (சுத்தமாக) பராமரிப்பார்களா என்பது தான். அதைச் செய்வார்கள் என்று எனக்கு ஒருத்துளிக்கூட நம்பிக்கையில்லை! . இவ்வளவு வசதிகள் இருப்பதால் பராமரிப்பு செலவு அதிகம் இருக்கும், அரசு கஜானாவை மட்டும் நம்புவதைவிடுத்து உறுப்பினர் அல்லாதவர்களுக்கு ஒரு பத்து ரூபாய் அனுமதி கட்டணம் வசூலிக்கலாம்.
நூலகத்தைச் சுற்றிப்பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தப் போது ஒருவர் என்னிடம் வந்து தன்னை அறிமுகம் செய்து அவர் என் வலைப்பூவின் நீண்ட நாள் வாசகர் என்றும் நான் நன்றாக எழுதுகிறேன் என்றும் சொன்னார் – எனக்கு மிக ஆச்சரியம். அந்த வாசகருக்கு என் நன்றி!
நூலகத்தின் இரண்டு மாடிகள் மக்களுக்காக திறந்து இருக்கிறார்கள், மீதம் வேலைகள் நடந்துக்கொண்டு இருக்கிறது. சென்னைவாசிகள் அனைவரும் அடிக்கடிச் செல்லவேண்டிய ஒரு இடமிது.
Today I went to visit the newly opened Anna Centenary Library in Kotturpuram (Opp. Birla Planetarium), Chennai. The library is in an area of 3.75 lakh Sq. Feet and a capacity to have over 1.2 Million books and thousands of E-Books & E-Journals. It is certainly a pride for TamilNadu (even for whole of India). I found the library to be fully air-conditioned, ample car parking facility, hundreds of tables and chairs to read comfortably, professional security guards and well trained & friendly staff (a rarity in Public Libraries in India) . One of the floors has a beautiful tree in centre – it is the Children section, today I could see good number of parents with their children enjoying their favourite books here. The ground floor has a huge well-equipped conference room and mini-theatres (for showing education videos, not yet open). Above all, open for access & clean modern Rest Rooms with running water in each floor!. One advantage in this library is that you can take your own books and read it in a special section earmarked for that purpose.
My worry is that with all these expenses made on public cost, will it be maintained like this – Sadly, I am not hopeful on that front. Without depending on Government grand alone, it will be wiser to charge say Rs.10 for every visit to non-members, it will be worth every paise.
Two surprises during my visit. While I was going through the Tamil section, a gentleman walked up to me, introduced himself as a regular reader of my blog and that he finds it interesting. My thanks to that reader. Second, I noticed a reader in the Library sitting with his feet on a fine leather sofa and reading – a staff walked promptly up to him told to have his feet down and to learn on how to behave in public places.
There are many Computers with content loaded in the Children Section and few other places. I am not sure during this digital age, whether you need such a big place to store books in physical format (or) it could have been all digital with plenty of Amazon Kindle like devices everywhere (of course chained) for people to access and read any of the books they want. May be, you need to approach this in stages and that might be the plan of the librarians here.
Two floors of this multi-storey library is completed, rest of the floors work is happening. Every Citizen of Chennai should come here regularly.
Update 19/Dec/2010: Today I went to the library with my son. Being a Sunday I was expecting lot of crowd, but surprisingly though it had good number of visitors it was definitely not crowded and was very comfortable. After a long time I enjoyed some peace & quietness while reading, realized the importance of a library atmosphere for enjoying books.
An elder has to be along with the kids in the Children’s section. So while he was enjoying story books, I spent the two hours reading a nice children book on “Religions in the world” by Chris Wright from OXFORD press. The book covers the reasoning behind Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Christianity & Sikhism in a way kids can understand it.
