After completing the RBI Exhibition it was not even 1PM and I was already in the Government Museum, Egmore campus, so why not go inside?. I don’t remember of having gone inside the Museum in Chennai (சென்னை அருங்காட்சியகம்) before, so I was not sure what to expect. Will it match my expectation of being a World Class Museum (or) will it be just like any other Government maintained public place in India, well designed at the time of opening but poorly maintained and deteriorating?
The Entry fee for Indians is Rs.15 and about Rs.200 for your Still camera. After spending nearly 3 hours inside the museum and seeing most of the displays, I was left with a mixed feeling. Some of the sections like Art, Currency Notes, Postal Stamps, Bronze Gallery blocks were relatively well maintained and worth visiting. But the Zoology, Children Museum, Botany are badly maintained, interiors aging and shabby – if Chennai wants to attract more tourists then Government needs to get its act together and crack the whip on maintenance & cleanliness.

In the bronze gallery there were many wonderful Bronze Statues of Lord Nataraja in different forms of his dance posture. The one in centre had a small write up about the significance of Lord Nataraja’s dance and Lord Nataraja being the symbol of macrocosm (cosmos) in the microcosm (human body), extracted from a book titled "Manual on the Bronze Gallery in the Government Museum, Chennai – Dr.R.Kannan, Ph.D., I.A.S”, profound philosophical idea.
It was a Saturday, so the museum was pretty empty – not too many people or students. One thing I couldn’t help noticing, was a lack of interest in the visitors to stay and study exhibits (of their interest & choice) in detail. Many of the visitors, especially students gave a very cursory look to most of the exhibits and moved on. I was left wondering was this lack of interest in studying things in detail, anyway related to modern day gadgets like Television and Computers – where you can get many of the information as and when needed by just searching or by visiting Wikipedia?. Only by studying the variety and differences in Plants, Animals, Cultures we will appreciate the beauty of the world we live in. I was wondering, by seeing repeatedly what is shown in Media & Films are we becoming tuned to the idea of a stereotype life. A world in our imagination in which we want everyone to be living in an Modern City with all amenities of live?
Today morning I went to do a recording of a brief video message from Prof.M.Anandakrishnan (Former Vice Chancellor Anna University, Advisor INFITT) for Tamil Internet Conference 2010. This got completed earlier than I expected so I had the whole day with me. So I decided to kill time by going to an Exhibition by RBI. As part of its Platinum Jubilee Celebration Reserve Bank of India (RBI) organized an exhibition about its Evolution, History & Functions. The highlight of the exhibition was display of currency notes from different eras. The exhibition was conducted at Government Museum Campus, Egmore, Chennai for 3 Days (Jan 30-Feb 1).
My expectation of the Exhibition being interesting was slim, but on the contrary it turned out to be quite informative & interesting. A RBI Officer patiently explained to every one interested to listen on how Currency Notes have evolved over the years, how to easily deduct fake notes and more. Next time a RBI Exhibition happens in your area, I recommend you visit it with your children.
1) Though there are many ways to deduct fake notes which we all are aware of like watermarks, black thin wire, Gandhi’s reflection at left and right of the note smiling at each other, unique numbering and more we rarely look for them because of an awkward feeling to do so in front of others. Today I learned there to be an easy way to find real RBI note. It is to touch words "Reserve Bank of India" at top on the front side with your finger, you should feel the letters to be raised a little and to be of a different texture from rest of the surface. This technique has the advantage of being able to be done by us little discreetly and also being friendly to people with poor/zero eye-sight.
Did you know?. - The ratio of fake notes to real in India is just “8” in One million notes - Starting April 2010, Polymer currency notes are likely to be introduced in India
2) On display where currency notes from various periods (Pre Independence and Post Independence) and offices. You can see in this note (Rs.1000) below it says "at any office of issue". This is because Currency Notes were printed and issued at many places across the country, this one was issued at Karachi, but was valid (which was not the case in earlier period) across British India.
3) From a vending machine outside, I bought few newly released Five Rupee coins showing a smiling Perarignar Anna image
Sometimes the best possible way to visualize something really complex is to see it as a graphic and have it printed on a huge poster. Few years back in one of the Microsoft Mix event, they released this super cool visualization of an illustration of the process of launching a web site. It was released into a website as well called “A website named Desire”, which made the huge poster available as a SilverLight Application using Deep Zoom. It is super cool, check it out.
(I saw this few years back and today I was trying to find it. Few hours of Google & Bing search, I couldn’t find it. Then with some help from a friend, I found it back. This shows how much more work has to be done in Web Search)
I was trying to get tickets to this movie in Satyam Cinemas for few weeks now, few days back I managed to book for today’s 11:30AM show. “Avatar” the movie was awesome and the 3D effects were not force-fitted, so they blended naturally into the scenes. The concept of a new world, a new planet the “Pandora” is very convincing and thought-provoking, so I was not surprised when I found that there was a Wikipedia for Pandora called “Pandora Pedia”

Update 6.Sep.2010: Today I went to the Special Edition of this movie with my cousin sister, who hasn’t seen the movie before. I was a little skeptical whether I will be entertained for the whole 3 hours of the movie – how wrong I was, the movie today was as interesting & captivating like the first time for me. Amazing work by Cameron.
”சீனா – விலகும் திரை” என்ற இந்தப் புத்தகம் திருமதி.பல்லவி அய்யர் (இவர் என்.டி.டி.வியில் பணியாற்றி போது நமக்கு எல்லாம் தெரிந்த முகம்) அவர்களின் “Smoke and Mirrors: An Experience of China” என்ற ஆங்கிலப் புத்தகத்தின் தமிழாக்கம். சாதாரணமாக ஆங்கிலத்தில் எழுதப்பட்ட நூலை ஆங்கிலத்தில் படிப்பது தான் ஆசிரியர் சொல்ல வந்ததை நாம் சரியாகப் புரிந்துக் கொள்ள முடியும் என்பது எனது கருத்து. ஆனால் கிழக்கு பதிப்பத்தின் கடையில் இந்த நூலைப் பார்த்தவுடன் பிடித்துவிட்டது, முக்கியமாக அதில் கேட்டு இருந்த கேள்வி என்னை சிந்திக்க வைத்தது – “சீனாவைப் பற்றி நமக்கு என்ன தெரியும்? ஒன்றும் தெரியாது என்பது தான் உண்மை”.
பல்லவி அய்யர் 2002ல் இருந்து 2007வரை ஐந்து ஆண்டுகள் பேய்ஜிங்கில் வாழ்ந்த அனுபவத்தில் இந்தப் புத்தகத்தை எழுதியுள்ளார். மேலோட்டமாக சீனாவைப் பற்றிய நூல் அல்ல இது, அவர்களுடன் வாழ்ந்து, சீனா மொழியைக் கற்று அதைப் பேசி, சீனாவில் உள்ள இன்றைய தலைமறையினருக்கு பாடம் எடுத்த அனுப்பவத்தில் எழுதப் பட்ட நூல். பல்லவி அய்யரின் சீனா வாழ்க்கை அனுபவங்களோடு, சீனாவின் பல்வேறு மாநிலங்கள்/நகரங்களுக்குச் அவர் சென்ற பயண அனுபவங்களையும் சேர்த்து சேர்த்து புத்தகம் நகர்வதால் ஆரம்பம் முதல் கடைசிவரைச் சுவை குறையவேயில்லை. ஆசிரியர் ஒரு இந்தியர் என்பதால், ஒரு இந்தியராக எனக்குப் படிக்கும் போது சீனாவைப் பற்றி தோன்றியப் பல கேள்விகளை ஆசிரியரே கேட்டு அதற்குப் பதிலும் சொல்லியிருப்பது இன்னும் நன்றாக உள்ளது.
கடைசியாக புத்தகத்தை முடிக்கும் போது இப்படி முடிக்கிறார் “இந்தியாவிடம் இருந்து சீனாவும், சீனாவிடம் இருந்து இந்தியாவும் கற்றுக்கொள்வதற்கு நிறைய விஷயங்கள் உள்ளன. ஒன்றின் பலம், மற்றொன்றின் பலவீனம்”.
இந்த புத்தகமும் நான் இந்த ஆண்டு சென்னை புத்தகக் காட்சியில் வாங்கியது. புத்தகம் வாங்கிய இரண்டு வாரங்களிலேயே படித்து முடித்தது எனக்கு ஒரு சாதனை (சும்மா தான்) என்றால் அதற்கு முழுக்காரணம் நூலின் ஆசிரியர் பல்லவி அய்யர் மற்றும் தமிழில் (அருமையாக) மொழிப் பெயர்த்த திரு.ராமன் ராஜாவும் தான்.
The poster below was given to my son studying in Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan School (KK Nagar) last year when he was doing his U.K.G. I have been saving this poster to do a blog post and managed to do it only now. The poster talks about simple ways to educate kids about private body parts, hugs, touching and other similar issues. It was issued by Tulir in support with the school.
One of my favourite getaways from Chennai is Yelagiri hills (details in my earlier post). This time I went there with my family and my brother in law Mr.Badri Thirumalai’s family for the XMas holidays. Staying in Yelagiri is a very relaxing experience and I love it. This time 3 of us (myself, Badri and his son Aravind) decided to do the 4KM trekking into Yelagiri forests. We went and came back on our own, but not sure whether we went in the correct trekking track.
We ventured up to an old pond (360 degree view done with Windows Live Picture Gallery below) in thick of the forest and a little beyond it and when the tracks ended we turned back
The experience was wonderful and relaxing. The trek route was peaceful, clean and green, absolute silence almost all the way in the forest – you can hear only the occasional bird chirps (see the video below), that’s all. It took us less than 2:30 Hours to complete the trek & return. Next time, probably I will take a “Guide” so that we can venture more into the forest.

இரா.முருகன் அவர்கள் எழுதிய கிழக்கு பதிப்பகத்தின் “மூன்று விரல்” புத்தகத்தைப் படித்ததில் இருந்து நான் அவரின் ரசிகராகவே ஆகிவிட்டேன். கடினமான ஒரு விஷயத்தை மிக இயல்பாக நகைச்சுவையோடு சொல்லும் அவரின் பாணி எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்துள்ளது. ஆதலால் இந்த ஆண்டு சென்னை புத்தகக் காட்சிக்கு சென்றவுடன் நான் நேரே சென்றது என் நண்பர் திரு.பத்ரி ஷேசாத்ரி அவர்களின் கிழக்கு பதிப்பத்தின் கடைக்கு தான். பத்ரி கூறிப்பிட்டார் இரா.முருகன் இதுவரை கிழக்குக்கு நான்கு புத்தங்கள் எழுதியுள்ளார் என்று – உடனே என்னிடம் இல்லாத மீதம் இரண்டு புத்தங்களை வாங்கிவிட்டேன். அதில் ஒன்று தான் “லண்டன் டயரி”. வாங்கி ஒரிரு நாட்களிலேயே படித்தும் விட்டேன். இதை படித்தயுடன் எனக்கு தோன்றியது – ஆங்கிலத்தை விட என்னால் தமிழ் புத்தங்களை வேகமாகப் படிக்க முடிகிறது என்று.
லண்டன் டயரியில் லண்டனின் சரித்திரத்தை ரோமானியர்களின் ஆரம்ப கால ஆட்சியிலிருந்து நமக்கு தெரிந்த விக்டோரியா மகாராணியின் ஆட்சி வரை சுவாரஸ்யம் குறையாமல் சுருக்கமாக சொல்கிறார் ஆசிரியர். சரித்திரத்தை ஒரேயடியாக சொல்லிக் கொண்டு போகாமல், ஒவ்வொரு பகுப்பிலும் ஒரிரு பக்கங்கள் எழுதிவிட்டு தற்கால லண்டனுக்கு வந்துவிடுகிறார். அதில் ஒரு சுற்றுலாபயணியின் கண்களுக்கு தெரியும் அழகான லண்டனைப் பற்றி நம் கண்முன்னே துல்லியமாக படம்பிடித்து காட்டியுள்ளார் திரு.இரா.முருகன்.
புத்தகத்தின் விமர்சனத்தில் சொல்லியிருப்பது மிகப் பொருத்தம் “உதடு விரிந்த புன்னகை குறையாமல் லண்டனின் சரித்திரத்தை உள்வாங்கவும், உட்கார்ந்த இடத்தில் இருந்தபடியே லண்டனின் குளிரை உணரவும் செய்கிறார் இரா. முருகன்”
