 I saw this movie The Shawshank Redemption a year or so back on a long flight. Unfortunately I started the movie after its 10th minute or so (when the main character Andy gets into the high security prison of 1940’s the Shawshank State Prison) and stopped just before the climax began, so I missed the highlight of the movie – the famous prison break. The part of the movie that I saw where a friendship blossoms between the two inmates (played by Tim Robbins & Morgan Freeman) was excellent that I have been wanting to see the movie in full. After I returned I searched for this movie with possible keywords that I could remember like Prison break and so on, but since the movie title was difficult for me to recall I couldn’t find it.
Recently about a week back, in one of the so called Stupid videos reposted in FaceBook by a friend I saw this movie title (the video had used the same name sound track) and I remembered about this movie. Today I traced the movie and finished watching the portions I missed. After watching it fully now and doing some reading on the Internet about the movie, I feel this – the thing about this movie is that you cannot forget it, when I watched the portions I missed today I could vividly recall the scenes I watched before and I am not good with memory. The movie certainly seems to leave a mark of itself in you. The movie was first released in 1994 and you can see many of the later years Tamil movies with Prison stories seem have been liberal with their inspiration borrowed from this movie.
A must watch, don’t miss it.
I was invited by one of the team members in Vishwak’s media team for his marriage (nikah) today. Many of us from Vishwak attended his marriage today which happened in a Hotel in Egmore, Chennai. This was the first time I was attending a Muslim wedding religious act (the earlier muslim weddings I have gone have been for the reception events). It was very interesting for me to see different ritual methods for a wedding from the common Hindu weddings I am used to. I was lucky I had seated next to me a team member from Vishwak who was a Muslim and who got married recently (which is more important, since he remembers them vividly), explain me in simple terms about the rituals.
I am sure there are more religious explanations, but in simple lay-man terms the Muslim wedding I attended to, happened like the following:
- The wedding hall was divided into two sections – one for Male guests and the other for Female guests. In general, I believe female guests (especially non-muslims) can be seated in the Male area, but not vice-versa
- The bridegroom comes to the stage in Male area escorted by his friends/family male members
- The bride comes to the stage in Female area escorted by her friends/family female members
- Then the religious ceremony was conducted by religious elders / priest. The priest reads verses from the Quran
- Thereafter the groom signs a legal document of marriage, along with his father & bride’s father, witnesses sign, then it goes to bride to sign
- Then the friends and family wished the bride and the groom separately and take photographs
- A good meal (Non-Vegetarian and Vegetarian separately) was served for all the guest to enjoy
- Then after some time, the bride and groom see each other and jointly welcome the guests
Reserve Bank of India has been a Banking Ombudsman programme for a long time, today I was glad to see prominent advertisements about it in major newspapers with an aim to popularize it. For me, whenever I had grievances and send them a fax threatening them to take it to RBI Ombudsman, they seem to act with more care. In general, I feel RBI is doing a fabuluous job in protecting Indian consumers rights, whether it is on Don’t Call Registry or Credit Card online additional protection and on many of the other items.
So for what items you can approach RBI Ombudsman (more details in RBI website here), here is a short list:
- Your bank fail to adhere to the written promises it made
- Your bank fail to disclose up-front the important terms and conditions while selling a product/financial service
- Your bank didn’t communicate clearly about rates and charges
- Your bank not adhering to RBI guidelines or Banking Codes and Standards Board of India
So what you have to do if any of the above happens to you. First write to your bank, if they don’t respond or fix the issue by one month, you can approach RBI ombudsman through letter, fax or email.

முதலில் கொஞ்சம் அதிகப்பிரசங்கித் தனமாக பசங்க செய்வதுப் போல தோன்றினாலும் படத்தில் ஒரு இடத்தில் கூட அபாசமோ, வன்முறையோயில்லை; மிக இயல்பான காட்சியமைப்புகள், சிறுவர்களின் நேர்த்தியான நடிப்பு. ஆசிரியராக வரும் நடிகர் அற்புதமாக செய்துயுள்ளார். முதல் பாதி கொஞ்சம் தொய்வடைந்தாலும், இடைவேளைக்குப் பிறகு படம் வேகம்.
நாயகன், நாயகி தங்கள் முதல் சந்திப்பிலிருந்து அவர்களுக்கு உதவுவது அவர்களின் செல்பேசி – இதைப் பார்க்கும் போது செல்பேசியால் ஒரு பத்தாண்டுகளிலேயே வாழ்க்கை எவ்வளவு மாறிவிட்டது என்று தோன்றியது (நான் காலேஜில் படிக்கும் போதுக்கூட இவ்வளவு எளிதாக சக மாணவிகளோடு பேச முடியாது, நண்பர்கள் நம்மை ஓட்டிவிடுவார்கள்).
இந்தப் படத்தைப் பற்றி இந்த வலைப்பக்கங்களில் (தேடல், வெட்டிப்பயல்) அழகாக சொல்லியுள்ளதால் நான் இத்தோடு முடித்துக் கொள்கிறேன்.
என் உறவுக்காரப் பெண் லண்டனிலிருந்து விடுமுறைக்காக வந்து உள்ளாள். எங்களை (நான், என் அக்காக்கள், என் மருமான், என் மருமாள்) சினிமாவிற்கு அழைத்துச் செல்வேன் என துடித்ததால் இந்த படத்திற்கு ( அச்சமுண்டு அச்சமுண்டு) போனோம், என் மனைவி தப்பித்துவிட்டாள். ஒரு பெற்றோராக அனைத்துப் பெற்றோரும் அறிந்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டிய ஒன்றை படமாக்கியதற்கு அறிமுக இயக்குனர் அருண் வைத்தியநாதனைப் பாராட்ட வேண்டும். ஆனால் குடும்பமாக குதுகளமாக பார்க்கும் படமில்லை, சிறிது வெறுப்படைவதை தவிர்க்க முடியவில்லை – இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் நன்றாக கதையைச் சொல்லியிருக்கலாம். அப்படி என்ன கதை?. பிரசன்னாவும், சினேகாவும் அமெரிக்காவில் தங்களது எட்டு வயது மகளுடன் தனியாக வசிக்கிறார்கள். அந்த குழந்தையை பாலியல் தாக்குதல் செய்ய ஒரு கொடியவன் முயற்ச்சிப்பது தான் கதை. அமெரிக்காவில் வாழும் நம் தமிழர்களின் இயல்பான வாழ்க்கை, அவர்களது குறுகிய வட்டம் இவற்றை மிக அழகாக செய்துயுள்ளார்கள் பிரசன்னாவும், சினேகாவும் – வாழ்த்துக்கள்; இவை மேலும் இருக்குமா என நம்மை எதிர்ப்பார்க்க வைக்கிறது இயக்குனரின் வெற்றி. பெயின்டராக வரும் வில்லன், வெளிநாட்டு நடிகர் ஜான் ஷா அருமையாக செய்துள்ளார்.
