Get my blog notification in your MSN Messenger

One of the cool features of MSN Messenger (unfortunately not widely known) is MSN Alerts. Alerts lets you get notified through a toaster popup for the alert services you have signed up. Alerts can include popular news, weather, stocks or any other event. From a content provider perspective MSN Alerts was not widely available – you have to sign elaborate agreements with MSN and pay a licensing fee.

Recently MSN announced MSN Alerts for bloggers free!. Using the service, bloggers can sign up and make MSN Alerts facility available from their blogs. Users who click on the link and subscribe, can receive notification whenever a new blog entry was posted. Try this in my blog – use the MSN Alerts in the right hand panel in the navigation section. Post your experience in the comments section.

Nicholas Negroponte – Being Digital & $100 Laptop

Many people in the IT Industry and beyond respect Nicholas Negroponte (chairman and co-founder of the MIT Media Laboratory) for his deep clarity on the power of “Bits” and “Digital” Technology. But for me, from the day I read his classic “Being Digital“, I have been curious on what this genius is up to now.

Couple of years back, he announced his dream of a “One Laptop per child“; To make it true was the idea of a sub $100 laptop. Everyone in the industry (including me) doubted whether this was ever possible – with Intel brushing it away even now. But alas, last month in the Tuniasia World Summit he unveiled it and also selected Quanta (Taiwan based World’s Largest Laptop Manufacturer) as the OEM.

The plan is to distribute several million of these laptops to underprivileged childrens in China, India, Brazil, Argentina, Egypt, Nigeria, and Thailand. The laptops will be Linux based, full-color LCD Display, 500MHz CPU, 128MB of DRAM, with 500MB of Flash memory, built-in wireless to find near by laptops ad-hoc. It will not have a hard disk, but it will have four USB ports. What I found as the most interesting feature was an innovative power – a manual wind-up (shown in yellow above). This is very important because the places it is being planned to be used are most backward areas where there is no power source and the laptop might even be the only light source during the night.

Using the laptops it is hoped that the children who before this couldn’t even afford paper textbooks – will now have access to all materials that they need to complete their education. All this with little or no further costs being spent by the local governments, after the first US$100 (for the laptop itself). A noble cause, hope it works and eradicates illeteracy in the world.

More on Music Season

After my first day with this Music season, next two days I went to Sri.T.N.Seshagopalan and Sri.Unnikrishnan vocal performances. I don’t understand Carnatic Music, but still the 2 hours each day was very peaceful – no work, can sit and silently think and once in a while enjoy music as well :-)

The only distrubance is caused by some inconsiderate people talking all the while during performance. During a Vocal show when the whole hall is very silent (other than the artist), you can clearly listen to even the minute murmurs. During Sri.Unnikrishnan’s performance I faced this problem the couple in front of me, kept talking all through the program – may be they don’t get a chance to do that in their house. After so much hesitation, finally when I left I told the “Gentle”man; surprisingly he didn’t apologize, but gave me a defying look.

Have you faced similar inconsiderate poeple especially in public places?. Please post your comments below.

Chennai Music Season 2005

If it is December (மார்கழி மாதம்) it is Music (கச்சேரி) Season in Chennai. Almost all the famous Carnatic Music Artists – Vocal and Instrumental, Tamil Drama (Play) artists perform in various halls (சபாக்கள்) during the month-and-half festival. Music lovers from around the world, Non-Resident Indians, Locals enjoy the performances. Not only the famous gets the stage, it is also the upcoming artists who get a chance during the morning hours for which the entry is free. December/January is an ideal time for this, as the climate in Chennai is little less warmer and pleasantly cold during the evenings. This year it has been super cold (anything less than 25 Degrees for Chennaites) due to the heavy rains.

Though I am an illetrate in Music, I love to hear it; every year I will want to attend as many programs as possible, but due to work commitments end up attending one carnatic performance and the weekend dramas. This year I hope I have started on a better note.

Yesterday with my mother (who is a trained vocalist) I attended Mrs.S.Sowmya vocal performance in Karnataka Sangam organized by Nungambakkam Cultural Academy (NCA). Though the songs were old classics (and hence I didn’t know them :-) ) I enjoyed the 135mins programme thoroughly. NCA has been organizing music festival for over 3 decades and is managed by its emminent Secretary Lion Dr.Natarajan, who is also one of my good well-wishers.
